Court Confirms Winn-Dixie Plan of Reorganization

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Nov. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. announced that the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Florida today entered an order confirming the company's Plan of Reorganization (the "Plan."). With this action, Winn-Dixie expects to emerge from Chapter 11 within 30 days.

Following a confirmation hearing held on Friday, October 13, the Honorable Jerry A. Funk today issued a ruling affirming that the company had met all of the necessary statutory requirements to confirm its Plan. The confirmation hearing followed a creditor vote in which all impaired classes of unsecured creditors voted in favor of the Plan. The Plan will become effective -- and the company will emerge from bankruptcy -- once all closing conditions to the Plan and to the company's exit financing have been met.

Home sales decline following US trend

Home sales in Birmingham fell 14 percent in September compared to a year ago, mirroring a softening of the market statewide and nationwide.

Birmingham area real estate agents sold 1,374 homes in September at a median price of $159,500, according to the Birmingham Association of Realtors. Including condominiums and town houses, Birmingham area real estate agents sold 1,527 properties in September.

Meanwhile, Alabama home sales also dropped in September, as sales in markets such as Baldwin and Mobile fell sharply, according to the Alabama Real Estate Research and Education Center at The University of Alabama.

Existing home sales in Alabama dropped to 4,766 in September, a 12 percent decline from September 2005. Nationally, existing home sales in September were 14.2 percent lower than sales in September 2005.

Housing market on the decline

The Alabama housing market declined significantly in September after a strong showing in August, according to the Alabama Real Estate Research and Education Center at The University of Alabama.Existing home sales in Alabama dropped to 4,766 in September, a 17.8 percent decline from August. Compared to September '05, sales are down 12 percent. Through the first nine months of 2006, existing home sales are still slightly ahead of last year with 45,855 homes sold year-to-date in 2006, compared to 45,742 homes sold through the first nine months of 2005.The average selling price in September dropped to $158,076, which is still $2,123 more than the average price in September of last year. Year-to-date existing home prices in Alabama remain considerably higher than 2005's year-to-date prices, according to the center.
